Quick Facts - DRAFT

Here are some quick easy reference facts about EDDR, providing a part summary of what is contained elsewhere on this website

Organisation

1) EDDR is a private company limited by shares (company #01796596). It was set up in 1984 to 'acquire, hold, manage, maintain, administer and deal with the common roads and verges adjacent and belonging thereto ….. on land ….. known as the East Dean Downlands Estate ….. ‘ (see History). All residents on the Estate are entitled to become shareholders.

2) AGMs are held around Feb/Mar each year

3) there are some 8,000m (5 miles) of road on the Estate connecting around 600 properties

4) currently EDDR has three directors: Robert Corbett (Chair), Brian Howe (Operations), Stewart Fuller (Finance & Co. Secretary). They commission contractors as required. There are no employees, the company has always been run entirely by volunteers

5) EDDR works closely with the Parish Council and the Residents Association to benefit all road users on the Estate

Roads

6) a map of the Estate roads is available under ‘other’ in the Library

7) EDDR does not own any of the Estate roads. It simply arranges for the road maintenance, including resurfacing, pothole repairs, and gully and drain clearances, based on the level of annual receipts from Estate residents

8) The Estate roads are classified as ‘private streets’. They are known as unadopted public highways but are different to private roads as they carry public rights of way

9) the normal rules of the road apply. The national speed limit applies, but EDDR is working with the Parish Council to introduce a 20mph restriction

10) there is no general right to park on the Estate roads, only a right to pass and repass over them

11) the Estate roads were generally constructed on a concrete base, now covered by a thin layer of tarmac. This means they require more regular maintenance than standard roads

Finances

12) The annual fee invoiced to Estate residents in 2026 is £140 per household meaning EDDR's expected income in 2026 is £84,000, if full payment is received from all households

13) EDDR aims to spend what it receives taking one year with another, subject to holding reserves of around £40,000

14) annual accounts for the past few years are available in the AGM folder in the Library
